Diaspora happy over vote verdict

KENYANS in the diaspora have welcomed the Supreme Court ruling affirming their right to vote.

The court last week ruled unanimously that every Kenyan, including those with dual citizenship, should be granted the opportunity to vote.

The judges upheld a decision by the Court of Appeal, which ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to set up voter registration centres in foreign countries.

In a statement yesterday signed by Bernard Marasa, the Kenya Diaspora Alliance urged IEBC to move fast and implement the ruling.

“We hope this ruling brings to an end all excuses IEBC has advanced to disenfranchise the diaspora,” he said.

Marasa said the IEBC and other constitutional offices must ensure the letter and spirit of the of the ruling is adhered to.

“We implore the National Treasury and Parliament to guarantee the timely appropriation of sufficient funding for diaspora voting,” he said.

KDA further urged the national executive and legislature to uphold President Uhuru Kenyatta’s promise on the ‘48th county’ by facilitating diaspora registration and voting.

“They should also provide for representation through diaspora constituencies,” Marasa said.
