Kenyan celebrities who were house helps, but managed to change their lives

Kenyan celebratiesSociety has often associated housegirls with failure. However, some celebs were once house helps, but managed to change their lives.

Award-winning musician, Gloria Muliro was once a mboch. She took up the job after high school to enable her raise money to clear fees. Gospel artiste Betty Bayo also worked as a housegirl for a year (2006) after dropping out of school due to lack of fees. She was forced to do menial jobs to survive and save money to go back to school.

“I was being paid  Sh70 per day for all the house chores. I felt this was little and decided to become a ‘mobile’ house girl,” she said.

Nyota Ndogo is a former housegirl who saved up for her music career from money earned as a house help. “I was a housegirl for two years, but then I decided I couldn’t work as a housegirl forever.

I used to go to the studio every Sunday to record songs. I chose to be a housegirl instead of getting into prostitution,” Nyota told The Nairobian, adding that she is still in touch with her former Dutch employer.
