A CS and a former politician want Bungoma MPs arrested for allegedly inciting ethnic contempt during a rally in the county at the weekend.
Water CS Eugene Wamalwa and former Bumula MP Bifwoli Wakoli said the politicians went “overboard” with a warning on chaos over Senator Moses Wetangula’s removal.
“It is saddening that these politicians have thrown hate leaflets and organised rallies to threaten members of the Kikuyu community over a matter that they were not involved in,” Wamalwa said.
In their address in Tongaren, Wakoli said: “We are calling on the police to act, enough is enough.”
Speaking separately in Bungoma town, county commissioner Mohamed Maalim said those involved in the distribution of the leaflets will be arrested and prosecuted.
Mohamed said politicians in Bungoma have been issuing reckless remarks in a bid to incite residents against one community.
“Every Kenyan has a right to live in Bungoma and any other part of the county. It is unfortunate that certain people are threatening violence against a particular community,” he said.
“We assure that those behind the move will be brought to justice as we will not allow a few people to disrupt the peace,” he said, adding investigations were launched.
Leaflets warning people “haunting the Bungoma Senator” and interfering with the ‘Mulembe nation’ were distributed in Kimilili, Bungoma and Webuye towns last week.
The leaflets were directed at “Mt Kenya People” who were referred to as ‘Basebe’, concerning the removal of Wetang’ula from the voters’ register over bribery claims.
During a prayer rally for Wetang’ula days later, area MPs warned that communities from Mt Kenya living in Bungoma could be in trouble for “being behind Wetang’ula’s woes”.
The politicians said the Senator’s troubles stem from Jubilee’s fear that Cord will endorse him for president in 2017.
The MPs present were Enoch Kibunguchy (Likuyani), Chris Wamalwa (Kiminini), Wafula Wamunyinyi (Kanduyi), Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren), Suleiman Murunga (Kimilili) and Nominated Senator Catherine Mukite.
