KENYAN YOUTHS AWARDED 2016 QUEEN YOUNG LEADERS AWARD

On June 23rd, 2016, the three Kenyans Ms Peris Bosire, Mr.Alex Mativo and Ms.Susan Mueni Waits were-were among 60 winners presented with the 2016 Young Leaders Awards presented by Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace.

The recipients were recognised for their exceptional leadership in their communities and it would make it the second year in a row that Kenyan Youths have received Queen Young Leaders Award with three others receiving the award the previous year.

Ms Bosire co-founded Farmdrive a  technology solution that keeps records and builds credit profiles for farmers which enable them to have access to reliable, digital and financial services.Mr Mativo has been recognised for starting E-lab, to reduce electronic waste in Africa by making art, fashion and other innovative products out of it.Ms Waita has been recognised for her work as a field coordinator for a girls’ programme.

The event was attended by Prince Harry, Kenya High Commissioner H.E Lazarus Amayo, former Prime Minister John Major, David Beckham, Sir Lenny Henry along with several other High Commissioners and Commonwealth representatives.

The High Commissioner congratulated the three winners and commended them on being positive youth Ambassadors for Kenya.

Prince Harry described the recipients as “an inspiration to so many”. Adding that what they had achieved was not self-serving but was for the good of the community and that less fortune

The Queens Young Leaders Award recognises and celebrates exceptional people aged 18-29 from across the Commonwealth, who are taking the lead in their communities and using their skills to transform lives. In this year’s Awards, Kenya and Nigeria led the pack of 21 African countries with three winners each while South Africa and Malawi had two winners. Winners of the Prestigious Award received a unique package of training, mentoring and networking.
