Bomet County Assembly Deputy Speaker Joyce Korir has resigned from office.
The shocking move came barely hours after a notice of motion to remove her from office was tabled in the House by Rogena Ward Rep John Molel.
Contacted, House Speaker Geoffrey Kipng’etich confirmed receiving her deputy’s resignation letter and pointed out that he had already initiated a process to replace her.
“Those interested in the seat have until Friday 9am to submit their applications for the seat,” he said.
The Speaker said his deputy has expressed interest in the Bomet woman representative’s seat and that her resignation will give her more time concentrate on her campaigns.
Mrs Korir letter read: “I wish to tender my resignation from the office of the deputy Speaker. I sincerely thank the county assembly for allowing me to render my services for the four-year period. Thank you.”
WIDE CONSULTATIONS
Contacted, Mrs Korir said she resigned ‘after wide consultations.’
“I have tendered my resignation after wide consultations with my electorate.
This will allow me to concentrate on other equally important matters,” she said.
She described the move to remove her from office as ‘mischievous’.
“I read politics in the whole matter,” she told the Nation.
Mrs Korir also accused the House Speaker of spearheading her political downfall.
She dismissed claims by some of her colleagues that she was incompetent.
Mr Molel, in his notice of motion, had claimed that the deputy Speaker had deliberately misled the House and failed to play the role of a moderator by openly participating in debates while presiding over sittings.
“The Deputy Speaker has continued to irregularly purport to overturn the decisions and well-reasoned rulings delivered by the Speaker and other members of the Speakers’ panel in complete disregard of the established parliamentary traditions, customs and tenets of the Constitution,” he said.
