Kibaki is ‘fine’‚ as family visits him in Johannesburg

Retired President Mwai Kibaki is recovering well at Johannesburg’s Netcare Sunninghill Hospital‚ according to a visitor accompanying his family during the strictly supervised visiting hours yesterday.

Family members, including his son and daughter, were seen walking in and out of the ward where he is being treated and would only say he is doing “fine”.

“He is doing fine. Contrary to negative reports which have been doing the round saying he has passed on. He is recovering well and we expect him to be released soon‚“ a man accompanying the family said‚ referring to reports from Kenya.

Tests were carried out to determine the severity of his condition. He is said to be “awake and talking”.

Security at the ward is strict.

When the TMG Digital team visited the hospital on Tuesday morning‚ they were stopped by staff at the ward’s reception‚ saying they were directed not to let anyone in.

“I can’t let you guys in. No one is allowed to see him‚ only his close family members can be let in and even if I move away from this desk‚ my staff members know that not a single soul should be let in unless they are close family members he wants to see‚“ a senior matron, who did not wish to be named, said.

“I know about his condition, but I cannot tell you. You need to consult the Kenyan embassy on that. I am expecting them this afternoon so they can update you‚“ she added.

The Kenyan embassy has been requested to give an update on the elderly statesman’s condition.

Kibaki fell ill on Saturday evening at his Muthaiga home and was taken to Karen Hospital. On Sunday, he was flown to South Africa for treatment.
