Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has faulted Jubilee legislators who endorsed Water Secretary Eugene Wamalwa’s bid for Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

Senator Sonko told a rally on Monday that he is open to any Kenyan joining the race to become the next governor of Nairobi County, but politicians should let the electorate to make the decision.

“Tumeskia pale Kiambu, watu wameendorse Eugene Wamalwa tusipinge, si ndio? Lakini mi nasema, siasa ya Nairobi itaamuliwa na wananchi wa Nairobi sio kina Waititu na kina Kanini Kega,” said Sonko.

The Senator went on to state that Nairobi County belongs to the 42 tribes in the country and that it should not matter what tribe the governor will come from.

“Kura ya Nairobi haiko na wabunge, kura ya Nairobi haiko na Wamalwa, kura ya Nairobi haiko na serikali wala opposition, kura ya Nairobi iko na nyinyi wananchi ndio mtaamua nani atakuwa gavana wenyu,” he said amid crowd cheers.

Mr Wamalwa was on Sunday endorsed by Jubilee MPs Kanini Kega (Kieni), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Jude Njomo (Kiambu Town) and Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East) to run for Nairobi governor seat on a Jubilee ticket.

Senator Sonko, who haa also declared his interest in the ticket, stated that he is willing to battle it out with anyone interested in leading the county.

“Mimi nakaribisha Eugene Wamalwa na wale wote wanataka kuwa magavana wa Nairobi njooni tukutane kwa debe wananchi waamue,” Sonko said while addressing the rally.

He added that no aspirant should be afraid of the other because democracy gives the power to the electorate and not individual candidates.

Other aspirants who have expressed interest in Nairobi gubernatorial seat through the Jubilee ticket include Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, nominated MP Johnston Sakaja and former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru.
