Jubilee Party Suffers Major Setback Over PNU Merger

The newly formed Jubilee Party on Tuesday suffered a major setback after the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal extended orders stopping its merger with one of its primary parties.

The tribunal suspended the dissolution and merger of PNU into the Jubilee Party until a case filed before it is heard and determined.

At the same, the tribunal allowed PNU to hold its annual delegates conference set for October 28.

The tribunal had last week barred the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u from declaring PNU and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s JP as merged.

The merger dispute was taken before the tribunal by party Secretary-General John Okemwa Anunda.

In lodging the complaint, Anunda submitted that the national delegates convention meeting held on September 9 and which agreed to dissolve the party was not constituted in accordance with the party’s constitution.

Meru Governor Peter Munya, who has indicated intention to defend his seat on the party ticket, was visibly present in court during the mention of the case.

The tribunal will hear the dispute on October 6.
