Days after the Party of National Unity (PNU) pulled out from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party, former President Mwai Kibaki has been replaced.
On Friday, PNU officials elected Meru Governor Peter Munya to be the new party leader replacing Kibaki who has been the head of the party.
The announcement comes barely two days after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal rejected the dissolution of the party into the newly formed Jubilee outfit.
The tribunal directed the registrar to publish a gazette notice in 14 days announcing that PNU did not dissolve to join the Jubilee grand merger unveiled on September 10.
According to the tribunal, James Kamama and Alfonse Musyoki who signed dissolution documents and submitted them to the Registrar, were not the appropriate officials required to do so.
The two are the party Chairman and Organising Secretary respectively – but according to the political parties’ tribunal, it is the Secretary-General who is required to sign the documents.
Kibaki formed PNU on September 16, 2007 while seeking a second term in office.
After leaving office in 2013, he was still the leader of the party until PNU officials elected Munya.
Meanwhile, PNU delegates have resolved to back Uhuru’s re-election bid but field candidates for all other elective posts.
