'Kenya is changing' Musalia MudavadiNAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 10 – As the National Super Alliance co-principals retreated to deliberate on who among the them will be the presidential candidate in the August General Election, a section of Musalia Mudavadi’s supporters held demonstrations demanding he be named the flag-bearer.

The supporters who were drawn from the Bungoma, Kakamega and Trans Nzoia Amani National Congress (ANC) branches, aboard boda boda’s, occupied Kakamega streets carrying placards that for instance read “Chief Minister ni wewe” in response to revelations that a report commissioned by the NASA principals did not recommend Mudavadi’s selection as their presidential flag bearer.

“As the Luhya nation and the ANC fraternity, we’re giving an ultimatum to the NASA principals that we shall not accept anything else than the presidency; the issue of Chief Minister is a non-issue because it is not even enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya. We are saying we want a constitutional office and the constitutional office that the Luhya nation is eyeing in the Presidency.”

While another demonstrator put it this way: “You cannot come to somebody’s house (NASA) and enter the bedroom. CORD should produce one candidate and as the owners of the house, our person is Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi.”

Only a few weeks ago, Wiper Democratic Movement member and Leader of the Minority in the National Assembly Francis Nyenze also issued an ultimatum of his own to the effect that if his party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was not named presidential flag-bearer, the Kamba community would abandon the NASA ship.

“We are saying we are getting tired since time is running out and it looks like it is a scheme to wait until the last minute to lock out any other presidential candidate. Honourable Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has suffered a lot of humiliation under some party in the Opposition,” the legislator said.

“He has been called a watermelon, but like Jesus before Pontius Pilate he has kept quiet, he has taken the trash but now he cannot take it any longer. The Kambas have reached an edge whereby if it is not Kalonzo we will go it alone.”

Musyoka later defended Nyenze arguing that he should not be “vilified” for having an opinion given Orange Democratic Movement leader Ali Hassan Joho and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed had expressed similar sentiments where their party leader Raila Odinga is concerned.

He however sought to assure that he was in NASA to stay regardless of who eventually carried their presidential flag, “As my brother Mudavadi said, tutakanyagiana hapo ndani tu.”

The ‘Luhya Nation’ that demonstrated on Monday made no mention of the fourth and final principal Moses Wetangula, Ford Kenya party leader, who also hails from the region.
