Ping-pong Shaban back in Jubilee, to take part in primaries

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 18 – Taveta Member of Parliament Naomi Shaban has rejoined the Jubilee Party, but is demanding assurance of fair primaries.

Addressing the press at her constituency Tuesday, Shaban said her resignation from the party was a result of some actors within the party working to undermine her bid to clinch the party ticket during primaries slated for April 21.

The legislator who was accompanied by supporters donned in Jubilee Party T-shirts said she was confident of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s and Deputy President William Ruto’s leadership but insisted she would not sit and watch helplessly as her career is destroyed.

“Somewhere someone was trying to throw in the spanner… I will not sit there to watch myself being destroyed after building my career for so many years,” she said.

“So if the party is still interested in my candidature then they will tell me and give me an assurance,” she added.

She dismissed claims that her defection was as a result of the failure by the ruling party to give her a direct nomination saying she is willing to face her opponents in Friday’s nominations.

The lawmaker who has served the constituency for three terms (15 years) is expected to face Banton Hamisi and Mwachari Naomi in the party primary.

It remains unclear who between the two was colluding to rig the nomination despite unverified claims that one of Shaban’s opponent was being prepared to replace the long-serving MP.

Various reports indicated she had considered the option of running as an independent candidate or joining one of the Jubilee allied parties.

However, given that political parties have already filled their list of nominees with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the MP only has two choices at her disposal – return to Jubilee or run as an independent candidate.
