The Opposition is seeking to control the Kwale county assembly to quash support for Governor Salim Mvurya.

ODM politician Nicholas Zani told The Star on Sunday that he is in the race for county speaker.

“After wide consultation, I have decided run for the seat,” he said after a meeting with area party officials.

He said he wants to ensure NASA controls the county assembly as they strategise following the general election.

While the county assembly is dominated by the Opposition coalition, Jubilee’s Mvurya was re-elected with a commanding majority.

Others vying for the seat are immediate former speaker Sammy Ruwa and lawyer Rafael Chimera.

“I am considering and consulting … if it is viable, I will try but if it is more politicised I will stay away. I will be stronger outside than inside and I know the MCAs are mature enough and will not allow external factors to undermine me.”

Chimera expressed confidence that his background in law makes him suitable for the position.

“With a background in law, together with experience in public service and financial management, I know I am up to the task,” he said.

Chimera works as a coordinator for the National Government Action Fund in the county woman representative’s office.

But Mvurya has said: “We are not scared…Kwale is no longer a region where leaders from outside would imagine undermining its leadership.”

NASA affiliate parties have 13 MCAs in the county assembly while Jubilee has seven.
