Jenipher Kosome, one of the first village chiefs in Kenya, recently discussed her link to the Maisha Project, an Oklahoma City-based nonprofit that was founded by Kenyan native Beatrice Williamson who lives in Oklahoma City.
The nonprofit connects Oklahomans and others around the country with Kenyan children and families in need of education, food and other support. Hundreds of Oklahomans, most from churches and other faith-based organizations, have partnered together to raise funding for Kenyans.
Many of them have participated in mission trips to build much-needed facilities in the African country, such as a clinic and school.
Kosome served as the keynote speaker for the Maisha Project’s 2017 Light the Future Gala held at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City.
Williamson said if not for Kosome’s support, she wouldn’t have been allowed to help her fellow Kenyans through Maisha because she is a female.
She said Kosome is one of the very few women chiefs in Africa, and she has labored tirelessly beside Maisha supporters in the district surrounding Maisha, fighting for women’s and children’s rights in Kenya.
