Blow to EACC as Commissioner Onsongo resigns

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 31- The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission suffered a major blow after Commissioner Jane Onsongo resigned on Tuesday citing infighting within the body.

Onsongo told Citizen TV on Tuesday evening that the commission was incapable of fighting the numerous mega corruption cases in the country.

This comes as the commission chairperson Mumo Matemu and his deputy Irene Keino were preparing to appear before the National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs committee on Thursday in an ongoing probe about their suitability to serve.

Matemu recently suspended the commission’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Michael Mubea who was reinstated hours later by the CEO Halake Waqo.

Waqo said the chairman had acted outside of his powers when he took the decision. The chairman and commission secretary however buried the hatchet and Mubea was allowed to resume his duties.

Parliament is currently debating a confidential report presented by President Uhuru Kenyatta which implicates senior government officials of engaging in corruption.

On March 10, President Uhuru Kenyatta received a petition over the top leadership at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. In the petition, some commissioners had reportedly asked the president to initiate the removal of Matemu as chairman.

Word went round later that the authors of the petition had later withdrawn it.
