The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has registered only 12,123 new voters since the fresh enrolment started on April 15.
The figures indicate Cord strongholds have registered the highest number of voters. The six Nyanza counties have registered 2,629 voters, beating Rift Valley’s 13 counties, which have registered only 2,091 voters.
Cord co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka’s Ukambani backyard has registered 1,799 voters in Kitui, Makueni and Machakos counties. Central Kenya, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s major political constituency, has registered only 1,246.
The region was leading in voter registration ahead of the March 4, 2013 general election. The statistics were compiled by IEBC last Wednesday.
The Coast region, perceived to be a Cord stronghold, has registered 1,880 voters while the North Eastern region counties of Garissa, Wajir and Mandera have registered only 187 voters.
Embu and Meru counties have registered 655 voters while 1,478 voters have registered in Western Kenya. Nairobi and Kajiado registered only 82 new voters.
Isiolo and Marsabit counties registered 76 voters only. Voter registration in Nairobi was suspended for months after the Court of Appeal nullified Governor Evans Kidero’s election on May 14.
He was later reinstated by the Supreme Court. On October 17, however, IEBC announced that the public can register as voters at huduma centres.
“Huduma centres are convenient for voter registration because that is where the public goes for documents such as ID cards and passports,” said a statement from the commission.
