Hacker group claims it is behind outages at Facebook, other sites

Internet sites including Facebook, the world’s largest social network, Instagram and other popular sites suffered temporary outages on Tuesday and a hacker group associated with other recent high-profile attacks claimed it caused the outages.

A Twitter account that purports to speak for hacker group “Lizard Squad” posted messages suggesting that it was behind an attack the temporarily blocked several major websites.

Facebook, its photo-sharing site Instagram, and other popular social networking sites, were unavailable from around 0600 GMT for upward of an hour according to user reports and Web monitoring sites in countries across the Americas, Asia and Europe.

Facebook and instagram websites go down

Social media sites Facebook and Instagram were momentarily unavailable worldwide Tuesday morning due to technical problems experienced by the two companies.

Facebook posted on their blog forum that the sites were down for the better part of an hour reportedly going offline for 53 minutes.

The sites were affected across desktop, mobile and tablet platforms with users taking to other social networks to decry the downtime.

Facebook which bought out Instagram in 2012 said it is will restore the sites in the shortest time possible.

“Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can,” Facebook said on the blog section of its website.

Facebook with its 1.3 billion users has previously had similar downtime going offline on June 19,  2014 for 20 minutes.
