The body lying at Moi Hospital mortuary in Voi is ICC witness Meshack Yebei’s, his family has said.
Yebei’s elder brother Moses Kisorio and his wife Lilian positively identified the body, found on December 30, 2014, on Friday.
“According to the looks, height and other body marks, I can say that I am 92 per cent sure that the body is that of my brother Meshack Yebei,” Kisorio told the press at the hospital.
He spoke after pathologists from Lancet Kenya, led by Ahmed Kalebi, collected samples for DNA tests.
Kisorio said Yebei was abducted by unknown people in Turbo town, Uasin Gishu county on December 28.
He said the family combed through all mortuaries in Rift Valley in vain.
“Today, pathologists have taken body samples for DNA testing. By looks, I am convinced that this is my brother’s body. However, let science prove through the DNA tests,” he said.
Lilian affirmed that the body is Yebei’s.
“I am sure he is the one. I am very much convinced that this is my husband because of the body marks,” she said.
The family however said they were unaware that Yebei was an ICC witness.
“I do not know if he was an ICC witness. He never told me that,” Lilian said.
Kisorio said the family has not contacted the ICC.
“We have not received any monetary support from the government to assist us in looking for my brother since he went missing. However, the police and different human right organisations have been very supportive,” he added.
Moi Hospital acting superintendent Abel Mwenje said a conclusive report following the DNA tests will be released in five to ten days.
