Jubilee MPs plot to reject Mwadeghu as minority leader

Jubilee MPs are plotting to frustrate Thomas Mwadeghu as the National Assembly minority whip and cripple his membership in the House Business Committee.

The MPs have said they will ensure the motion to approve Mwadeghu’s appointment is defeated. The committee, chaired by Speaker Justin Muturi, oversees the parliamentary calendar.

It schedules House business and issues directives as well as guidelines on matters that should be given priority or postponed. According to House rules, appointments or changes to any committee must be done through a motion approved by a simple majority of members.

Cord recalled Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro, saying he could no longer articulate the movement’s agenda in the House. A motion to have Mwadeghu appointed to the committee and the reconstitution of other departmental committees to include MPs Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) and Stephen Kariuki (Mathare) was withdrawn and amended after Jubilee MPs threatened to shoot it down unless Mwadeghu’s name is removed.

On Tuesday, the committee had a stormy meeting after nominated MP Johnson Sakaja questioned Mwadeghu’s presence.
