Three Machakos MCAs have accused Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka of being behind threats to impeach governor Alfred Mutua.
Majority leader Joshua Mwonga said Kalonzo deems Mutua a threat to his reign as the Ukambani political kingpin.
He claimed that about 20 MCAs are plotting to censure Mutua when the county assembly resumes.
“Kalonzo has been calling us individually and secretly soliciting for our support to have Mutua impeached and replaced by his deputy Bernard Kiala,” Matuu MCA Joseph Matolo said.
Deputy Majority whip Gideon Kavuu said Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama was only the face of all the Wiper members planning Mutua’s downfall.
“A Wiper meeting held last year in Naivasha agreed that Mutua’s wings had to be clipped as he was making the party leader and Muthama look bad,” Kavuu said.
The leaders spoke separately over the weekend following Mutua’s Muthetheni tour on Thursday.
They claimed that the governor’s popularity due to his quick approach to development projects makes Kalonzo and Muthama uncomfortable.
They added that the Wiper party is planning to replace Mwonga and Majority whip Timothy Kilonzo ahead of the motion to impeach Mutua.
“We are also informed that money is to be poured to sway MCAs to move away from Mutua but we will not be swayed,” they said.
They however noted that Ukambani residents have challenged Kalonzo to state what he has achieved in his two decades as a politician.
Mutua said on his tour that an attempt to impeach him would fail because of lack of quorum.
“I enjoy support from 40 of the 59 members of the county assembly, their plot is bound to fail miserably,” he said at Wamunyu market.
He noted that the Constitution permits residents to replace a poorly performing MCA after two years.
