A Kenyan woman who died in France on January 13 after five years in a coma was buried yesterday, the family said.
Leila Omar, 43, is said to have jumped from a two-storey building in 2010 while she was six months’ pregnant.
Doctors saved the baby.
Omar was divorced from Frenchman Fabrice Pradie at the time of her death.
Her body was detained at a Marseille hospital over a Sh40 million bill.
Omar’s family in Kenya has been seeking financial assistance from well-wishers and the government to travel to France.
The French government waived the bill and helped in processing their visas to travel for the burial.
Omar’s sister Amina Bakari and other family members received financial help from the Mombasa government.
Human rights organisation Haki Africa has been seeking finances for the family members’ travel.
Executive director Hussein Khalid yesterday said Omar was buried at a ministry cemetery in Saint Chamas town.
“The Kenyan Embassy worked hand in hand with the family and Haki Africa to ensure a good send-off for the deceased,” Khalid said.
He said Omar’s first-born daughter Norah Zeinab, her sister Bakari and Haki Africa administrator Salma Hemed attended the burial.
Khalid said the three will be following up on Omar’s two children and any property she might have left behind.
“The team will talk to the Kenyan embassy in France to see what information they may have regarding the falling of Omar from the second floor of a building,” he said.
Khalid said the burial arrangements were facilitated by the Kenyan embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi and the French government.
