Kenyan help Wichita State advance to NCAA sweet 16 basketball tournament

Tom “Bush” Wamukota played 14 minutes of Sunday’s NCAA men’s tournament second-round game against Kansas. And now, he’s got the chance to earn a few minutes in the round of 16.

Wamukota, a post player that comes off the bench for Wichita State University in Kansas, helped little brother beat big brother on Sunday afternoon, helping the Shockers upset second-seeded Kansas, 78-65, in Omaha, Neb.

The result: the Shockers will move on to the sweet 16 round of the tournament. They’ll face third-seeded Notre Dame on Thursday night at 6:15 p.m.

Wamukota had one point and two rebounds in his 14 minutes on Sunday. His point, of course, came at the free throw line.

Wamukota, originally from Kenya, played for KC in the 2013-14 season. He averaged six points and about seven rebounds a game that season over 31 games. He’s a junior for the seventh-seeded Shockers.

Of course, getting past Notre Dame Thursday won’t be an easy feat. And Wichita State has a pedigree of pulling the upset: they have been to the Elite Eight round on four previous occasions. In fact, they were in the Final Four just two seasons ago, in 2013.

If the Shockers can somehow defeat Notre Dame, they’ll take on either scrappy West Virginia, one of the few Big 12 Conference teams left in the tournament, or juggernaut Kentucky, now 36-0 and with visions of the perfect, unbeaten, championship season.
