Kenyan Man Hangs Himself at a Mental Health Facility in Texas

A 33-year-old Kenyan man is dead after hanging himself Friday at the Psychiatric Emergency Treatment  Center in Conroe.

Police officials said the man is homeless and as of late Friday afternoon, authorities were still trying to locate his family members.

Conroe police responded to the scene at 706 Old Montgomery Road next to the CPD headquarters about 4 p.m., where witnesses reported a man had committed suicide.

Tri-County Services has provided outpatient care for mental health patients since 1983. The facility on Old Montgomery Road opened in May 2011.

Local treatment, according to Tri-County, means eliminating long drives, potential time in jail, additional strain on crowded hospitals and the need for constable’s deputies and other law enforcement personnel to leave their jobs in the counties they serve in order to provide transportation and act as an escort for the patients.

The idea for an emergency psychiatric facility first started in 2000, but it needed community partners to help with funding for construction and operating funds.

The PETC is fundedcollaboratively by Montgomery County United Way, Montgomery County, Montgomery County Hospital District, Montgomery County Clinical Services, city of Conroe and the Department of Health Services.

The treatment center is designed to treat on both a voluntary and involuntary basis and provides treatment for adults who are experiencing psychiatric crises.

Tri-County’s website states that most patients are able to avoid admission to Rusk State Hospital.

No other information was available before press time.
