Kenyan woman gets probation for New York marriage fraud

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – A woman from Kenya has been given one year of probation for paying an American man to marry her so that she could stay in the United States.

U.S. Attorney William Hochul (HOH-kuhl) says 40-year-old Pauline Gichuri of Buffalo was sentenced Thursday on her conviction of conspiring to commit marriage fraud.

Authorities say Gichuri paid a U.S. citizen $5,000 to enter into a sham marriage in 2004.

Gichuri was naturalized in 2010 but because she obtained citizenship through fraud, prosecutors say she may face deportation.
