Kenya’s Lupita Nyongo is among the Hollywood stars expected to present awards at the 87th Oscar Awards ceremony on Sunday night in Los Angeles.
The 12 Years a Slave actress, who won best supporting female actress during last year’s ceremony, has been selected alongside fellow reigning winners Jared Leto, Cate Blanchet and Matthew McConaughey to present this year’s awards to actors and actresses who win in the same categories in keeping with the 87-year tradition of the ceremony.
Last Year Blanchett was awarded best female actress while Leto and Mc Conaughey were awarded best supporting male actor and best male actor respectively.
“Not totally unexpected news: Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Matthew McCaughey and Lupita Nyong’o — last year’s Oscar-winning actors — will return to present at this year’s ceremony, the show producers have announced,” according to the BBC.
OSCAR’S TRADITION
Inviting back the winners of the four acting categories is something of an Oscar’s tradition. Last year was a remarkable one for the Kenyan actress, the daughter of Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o, who made her global big screen debut with her role as Patsey, a slave on a Lousiana cotton plantation in the award-winning movie.
The role earned her nominations for several award including a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress, a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and two Screen Actors Guild Awards including Best Supporting Actress, which she won.
She became the sixth black actress to win the best supporting actress award, the first African actress to win the award and the only Kenyan to ever win an Oscar.
