MP Wants Referendum Losers To Bear Costs

Kiharu Mp Irungu Kang’ata is now proposing that Parliament should amend the Elections Act to compel those seeking for a referendum to pay the costs if they lose the vote.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament Buildings, the MP says that he has already written to the Speaker of the National Assembly Justine Muturi notifying him of his planned amendment to the Elections Act.

Kang’ata said it would be unfair and an extra burden to the taxpayer to meet the costs of a failed referendum.

The legislator further added that  this would also stop the government from paying the projected 8B shillings of a defeated referendum being pushed by CORD

This comes even as the push by CORD coalition for a national referendum to seek the public’s opinion on various challenges affecting the country continues to elicit varied reactions from leaders across the political divide.

CORD Minority Deputy leader in the National Assembly Jakoyo Midiwo says the vote will free Kenyans from a very expensive governance structure.

This even as majority of the ruling coalition leaders continue to oppose referendum calls by opposition.
