ODM divisions:Raila Odinga summons ODM top organ

Raila+Oyugis+ODM leader Raila Odinga has called a meeting of the party’s national governing council (NGC) on Friday next week, as he moves to contain divisions in his party.

The meeting will also plan the reorganisation of the Orange party and strategise on how to hold grassroots elections and when to hold a national delegates conference to elect new office holders.

Mr Odinga said in Nairobi on Monday that ODM was stable, contrary to reports that the party’s fortunes were dwindling.

This follows an eruption of dissent from mainly youthful party MPs not happy with the way affairs are conducted.

Party loyalists have labelled the dissenters moles of the ruling Jubilee Coalition.

Mr Odinga urged party supporters to stay calm. He said ODM and all the Cord coalition parties were being strengthened ahead of the next elections.

“We will be meeting next week to discuss a number of issues, including the matter of the botched party elections and grassroots elections.”

The Cord co-principal denied that his party was growing weaker. He said the Orange party was still strong and would reorganise itself for a battle with opponents in the next polls.

The NGC comprises the National Executive Council, the Parliamentary Group, the party’s county chairpersons, the secretariat, and the youth and women leagues.

Mr Odinga’s spokesman, Mr Denis Onyango said: “We have invited everybody to come to the meeting. As far as we are concerned, the party has no rebels.

“All MPs have an invitation to attend the NGC.”
