ODM MPs call for disbandment of Ababu-led House committee

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) wants the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee disbanded over bribery allegations.

ODM national chairman John Mbadi said the bribery claims are rooted in the committee, in which he is also a member and chaired by the party’s Secretary General Ababu Namwamba, “to the extent that it must be reconstituted afresh”.

“There are serious allegations of corruption in the committee, which we cannot wish away because they have dented and tainted its image. It must be dissolved and constituted afresh,” stated Mbadi. He adds: “Many of its members have been bribed to the extent that it cannot stand.”

Mbadi also petitioned the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to look into the matter and unearth claims of abuse of office within the watchdog committee.

Mbadi was speaking at Atela village, during the burial of Celestine Owidi, who was a nominated member of Homa Bay County Assembly.

Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor said the wrangles in the committee paint ODM in bad light “because corruption is deeply rooted in it”.

“Our image has been put into focus following claims that our party Secretary General has been compromised,” said Aduma.

Other legislators in attendance; Silvance Osele (Kabondo Kasipul MP) and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay Women Rep) faulted the television blackout following the switch off of the main television stations in the country- KTN, NTV, QTV and Citizen TV following the raging debate on digital migration.
