Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has denied allegations that he influenced the irregular award of a Kenya Pipeline Company tender for a share of a bribe.
The EACC corruption report claimed Sonko and suspended Energy CS Davis Chirchir colluded to share a Sh1.35 billion kickback.
Sonko said he had filed a case against KPC and the Energy ministry on behalf of his constituents.
“I don’t understand why my name has been dragged into this dossier given to the Senate by the President. I cannot influence any pipeline deal,” he said.
“I was to negotiate with the government on how my area residents would be paid their Sh25 billion that I was claiming. It is not as alleged in the report.”
He addressed journalists after appearing before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission on Friday.
Sonko further refuted claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta was involved in the Waitiki land case as alleged by suspended Lands CS Charity Ngilu.
He said the government chose to purchase the land to fulfill a pledge to the people of Mombasa.
“Surveyors were sent to the land and identification of real owners done. We gave a proposal to the government that it should pay Waitiki Sh1 billion upfront after which he would surrender the title deeds to the government,” he said.
He added that the money was paid to the government , not to Uhuru.
“Each squatter on that piece of land was to pay Sh200,000 and get a genuine deed from the government,” he said.
