Tennis Star Venus Williams Launches Online Drive to Help Kenya’s Girl Child

World tennis star, Venus Williams has also joined Hollywood actress Connie Nielsen to help residents of Kibera, albeit on a different platform.

The tennis sensation has partnered with an international charity to support girl-child educational initiatives for students in Kibera slums.
In a press statement, Ms Williams said she had launched an online campaign Join My Village (JMV), a charitable partnership between CARE, Merck and General Mills whereby she will contribute Sh2.2 million. Accompanying the contribution from Venus Williams is a challenge to her fans, whom she is calling on to help unlock the Sh2.2 million pledge. When they “Like” JMV content on Facebook, or “re-tweet” JMV content on Twitter, USD1 is unlocked – up to the full pledge by Ms Williams during the two-week campaign.

The campaign aims to raise up to Ksh 6.6 million.

It appears the star has a soft spot for Kenya having already set up a girls secondary school in Machakos county and a tennis training programme for children in Kibera slums.
