Video:Ruth Odinga withdraws from Kisumu gubernatorial race
Prime Minister Raila Odinga younger sister Ruth Odinga has pulled out of the Kisumu Gubernatorial race in a move she says will restore peace in the county.
Ruth said she will remain in ODM and campaign for Raila as well as work for the people of Kisumu as she has done in the past.
“I step down for the sake of peace in the country and Kisumu in particular,” she said.
At the same time Ruth cited it was unfortunate that her candidature had been tied to her relationship to the Prime Minister, insisting her decision to vie for elective office was individual.
Her rival Jack Ranguma will now be the party’s flag bearer for the March 4, General Election.
On Sunday, protests rocked Kisumu and its environs to denounce the alleged announcement that had won the ODM nomination ticket.
But ODM’s National Elections Board (NEB) denied declaring Ms Odinga winner of the Kisumu governor’s nomination and urged residents to remain calm.
