Tuesday February 19, 2013 – With 12 days remaining to the historical general election, Prime Minister Raila Odinga has dropped his demand for “six piece” voting in Nyanza region after witnessing a hostile rebellion in the last two weeks.
On Monday, ODM’s Elections Board Chairman Franklin Bett said the PM is now asking his supporters to vote in large numbers on March 4th to ensure he wins in the first round.
“We have started an aggressive campaign to encourage people to get out and vote to the last man. So asking for a “six piece suit” in some places does not help us at all,” Bett said.
Two weeks ago, the PM was booed and heckled as he appealed for “six piece” voting in his Nyanza backyard.
However sources close to the PM said he realised that “six piece” voting does not augur well with voters, saying he wanted to ensure he forms a strong government with experienced politicians but not political greenhorns.
The desire for “six piece” has been prompted by the realisation that a substantial bloc vote will be required to control the 11th Parliament.
