Jubilee promise:We are ready to offer pupils laptops, says Samsung

Samsung says it is ready and willing to supply schoolchildren with solar-powered laptops.

On side interview at fourth Samsung Africa Forum at Cape Town, South Africa, Mr George Ferreira, chief operating officer and vice-president of Samsung Electronics Africa noted that his company will be engaging with the government once the opportunity presents itself.

“We are ready and willing to engage with the government,” Mr Ferreira told theNation.

During the campaign for the just concluded elections, President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and his team promised to give all children in public schools solar-powered laptops.

The promise stands to be the first test in delivering their manifesto if they survive the suit filed on Saturday by their main rival, Coalition of Reforms and Democracy (Cord) on the validity of their win.

Samsung is currently rolling out solar-powered laptops and generators in a number of African countries including Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda and DRC Congo. Kenya promises to present an added business opportunity.

“That is big for us. We are absolutely excited about the prospect. We will be biding like all other electronic manufactures will but our advantage will be that we are offering more than just laptop,” Samsung East Africa business leader Robert Ngeru noted.
