Shock: Ruto’s URP clinches Makueni – Rebellion against Kalonzo/ Muthama as they get 1 Vote

Saturday March 23, 2013 – In what can be termed as a rapid change of voting dynamics in Makueni County, a URP candidate allied to Deputy President- elect William Ruto has been elected as the first Speaker of the County.

Stephen Ngelu scooped 20 votes out of a total of 29 to beat 10 other candidates to the seat in the first round of the voting process.
Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper candidate Athanas Kisilu Nganda managed only one vote.
Makueni County is perceived as a CORD stronghold and the entry of URP in the Speaker has sent shockwaves to the CORD team especially if the Supreme Court rules for a Presidential run-off.
One member of the County Assembly was overheard saying that leaders in the region unanimously agreed to vote for a URP candidate, saying VP Kalonzo Musyoka and Machakos Senator- elect Johstone Muthama mislead the Kamba community in joining CORD alliance in the just Concluded General Election.
In his acceptance speech, Ngelu said he will make sure the business of the house will be conducted according to the constitution.
“I undertake to perform my duties in respect to the constitution and respect for all the residents of this county,” Ngelu said.
