Those who opposed the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem had hope that their efforts and scary tactics had discouraged Nehemiah and his team. But exactly the opposite happened. These remnants were motivated to rebuild the wall. When Sanballat and his team heard about their progress, they were not amused.

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are? Nehemiah 4:1-2

His partner added this comment:

Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones! Nehemiah 4:3

You can hear signs of frustrations from the opposition. Their tactics to scare Nehemiah and his team from rebuilding the wall had failed. Now that the rebuilding was moving along with incredible speed, this opposition realized they could not stop it any more. So they resorted to ridicule.

  1. Those who oppose you or do not approve of what you are doing have no credibility to make any comments about your work. In fact, no matter how good of a comment they may attempt to make, it will not be coming from a good heart. Some comments might only be the “Cry of the Crocodile”.
  2. As a matter of fact, you should not seek their approval for your work at all. Once they have shown a discontent about your work, nothing will ever make them to see it differently.
  3. Our enemy the devil cannot be genuine in any comments he might make to us. He might sounds like he is out to help us, but his ultimate goal is to destroy us. Never forget this!
    1. He came to Eve in the Garden of Eden and told her that God had not given them the best. According to Satan, the best was to eat the forbidden fruit. It sounded as though he was on Eve’s side, but his ultimate goal was to cause mankind to fall.
    2. When he tempted Jesus, Satan acted as though he had something better for Christ but ultimately, he wanted to hinder Christ from going to the cross in order to rescue Mankind and destroy the power of the devil.
    3. We should also watch out! He can still come to us with the same tactics, acting as though he is out to protect our interests or meet our needs. But ultimately, he is out to destroy us.
  4. Watch out on those who oppose the gospel of Christ! Unless they have a repentant heart, do not be deceived by their comments. Without a changed heart, they will continue to oppose the gospel.
  5. But here is a very important point; Satan knows that ultimately victory is ours in Christ. He also knows that he has been defeated. But he does not act as a looser. He fights like a winner in order to scare us from fighting the battle for Christ.
    1. This is why every time you set up to start something new for Christ; you will face many obstacles. This is because Satan is trying to scare you out of it.
    2. For this reason, the worst mistake you can make is to quit because of these obstacles. If you do, then you will have given victory to the enemy. Press on persistently with prayer! And you will soon discover that there will be no more obstacles on the way. This is exactly what Nehemiah and his team discovered.
    3. This is also true for new believers. Satan uses unbelievers to scare them of their new decision to follow Christ. A common tactic is this: “We know this is just for a short time. You will be back with us very soon”.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;

I have come that they may have life,

And have it to the full.

John 10:10

Opposition is just like this thief
