The African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation (AIRF) and Montgomery  County Councilmember Valerie Ervin are pleased to invite you to learn about: Mavuuno Greenhouses Ltd, a social enterprise initiative whose mission is to reduce poverty and fight hunger currently in Kenya and beyond.

As a friend of AIRF and avid believer in the green movement, we would be grateful if you would join us for a wonderful afternoon of sharing and learning.  The event will also provide an opportunity for micro-finance in this groundbreaking new method of sustainable agriculture in Africa.

These greenhouses were designed by the department of  Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship (HESE) at Pennsylvania State University.  Professor Khanjan Mehta and his team will be on hand to present this technology and answer your questions on their research and design.

This past May marks the first anniversary of Mavuuno initiative started in Kenya by Wanjiru Kamau,PhD – the founding president of AIRF and a 2011 Purpose Prize Winner. Dr. Kamau invested part of her Award in the Mavuuno Greenhouses as a  for profit arm of the AIRF.  She will share her experiences constructing the greenhouses, training diverse communities of farmers on greenhouse management and the challenges and successes  of achieving the mission of Mavuuno. For more information about Mavuuno please visitwww.mavuunogreenhouses.com

Councilmember Ervin is a long-time supporter of AIRF and represents an area of Montgomery County with a significant continental African population.  She has been a tireless advocate on issues of poverty and food- both locally and globally. This issue and efforts of those involved in sustainable agriculture both here in the United States and abroad are boosted significantly when we can support projects like the Mavuuno Greenhouse initiative.

Thank you very much for your interest. Please be sure to rsvp as space is limited.
