IEBC Suspends Oswago And 3 Others
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has suspended IEBC CEO James Oswago and three other officials charged with corruption over Ksh. 1.3 Billion tender for election kits.
Oswago was suspended alongside Deputy Commission secretary Wilson Shollei, Finance and Procurement Director Edward Karisa and Procurement manager Willy Kamanga.
In a statement sent to newsrooms, the IEBC said it had suspended the four as per Section 62 (1) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, having been charged in court on 30th October, 2013.
In the statement, IEBC says that the law requires that a public officer charged with corruption or economic crimes be suspended with effect from the date of the charge till proceedings against him/her are discontinued, acquitted or convicted.
IEBC has appointed Betty Sungura Nyabuto as Acting CEO, Jason Ngute Akoyo as acting Director of Finance and Procurement and Benard Nyachieo as acting Procurement manager.
The four top officials of IEBC were arrested on Tuesday last week by officers from the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) over the Ksh 1.3B tender scam.
The officers are wanted over a tender involving the procurement of electronic voter identification kits that failed during the March 4th general election
The officials will also face other charges of failing to comply with procurement laws and abuse of office.
The charges relate to the tender to procure Electronic Voter Identification Devices (EVID) which was awarded to a private company, at a cost of1.3 billion shillings.
The four have denied the corruption related charges against them,
