It is difficult to understand how the Lord Jesus could pray for His brutal executors to be forgiven. We often try to excuse our unforgiving hearts by arguing that Christ was fully God and fully man while we are sinful beings. However Christ calls us to follow His divine example.
Putting into practice what we learn from the word of God is not always easy yet God’s word is clear that we are to obey Him. Think of someone toward whom you have harbored a bitter spirit, as you do so, ask the Lord to flood your heart with compassion and change your unforgiving spirit.
If as believers we did this, what a transforming difference it would make in our homes, offices, churches and relationships with others. May the grace of the Lord help us live peaceably with every person we come across. Ground that is filled with roots of bitterness needs to be plowed by the grace of God.
