DEVOTION:This Does Absolutely Nothing For You!

I would like to remind you that from the previous chapter we have been examining the first sermon presented by Our Lord Jesus Christ. And it is titled, “Sermon on the Mount’. Whatever Christ said in this sermon sets the stage and foundation of everything else He taught. It would be wise for us to pay close attention to this sermon.  It consists different topics that He addressed or preached on. We noted earlier that in this sermon Christ presented ideas and principles that was a departure from the norm. Basically, Christ presented radical ideas that demanded a radical lifestyle.

In today’s passage, Christ focuses on the right view of what we need or luck. He begins by making this categorical statement;

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Matthew 6:25a

Then He adds this question to make us think further about this statement.

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Matthew 6:25b

The reason why we shouldn’t worry about these needs, Christ says

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matthew 6:26

The conclusion is: If God cares about the birds of the air, how much so for us?

Then Christ raises this question that should convince anyone that worry does absolutely nothing for us. Here is the question:

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Mathew 6:27

The conclusion is obvious: Since none of us can add even an hour to our lives by worrying, then we shouldn’t worry at all because worrying does absolutely nothing for us.

  1. So what is the alternative if worrying does absolutely nothing for us? The Apostle Paul presents the same principle but with an alternative. Some have call these “the Tylenol for worry”.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6

  1. The above alternative brings peace. By implication, the presence of worry means the absent of peace in our minds. Here is how Paul states the benefit this alternative to worry.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

  1. How are you doing with this worry? Are you a worrying champion for anything that you need or luck? Or have you found a solution to this problem? Here are some questions to help you rethink about this worry.
    1. If worry does absolutely nothing for you, then why should you worry about anything?
    2. If the alternative, that is prayer, brings peace to your mind, then why would you entertain the enemy of peace in your life?
    3. By worrying, you are in a sense saying, I can handle this issue. Worrying therefore is searching through all your available resources to see how you can solve this problem. But the truth is this, by the time it becomes a worry, it is a demonstration of your inability to handle it. So why torture yourself with worry and yet you know that you do not have the solution to this problem.
    4. If God is ready to take care of this problem for you, then why do you want to keep struggling with it?
  2. May be some people think of worry as a prestigious act where by people would see you worrying and when they ask you what is happening, you answer, I am fighting about life or trying to make it in life. Some would answer, fighting for success night and day!
  3. Unless you discover the power of prayer over worry, you can never overcome it with anything else exept by prayer. I have discovered in my life that once I hand over my problem to God, it ceases to be a big issue even if the solution has not been found. It is something that works like magic. Give to God! And the peace that surpasses all understanding will guard your mind and heart.
  4. Do you have any other way that you have found helpful in overcoming worry?

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,

What you will eat or drink; or about your body,

What you will wear. Is not life more than food,

And the body more than clothes?

Can any one of you by worrying

 Add a single hour

To your life?

Matthew 6:25,27

And the answer is No!
