There was drama in a church in Murang’a county yesterday as politicians embarrassed Deputy President William Ruto over protocol.

There was confusion at Mumbi Catholic Church as Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki, Deputy Speaker Kembi Gitura and Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wairia disagreed over who to welcome Ruto to speak.

The standoff took almost five minutes as the leaders argued on the matter.

Gitura insisted that he was the right person to introduce the DP as he was the one who had invited him to the fundraiser for the construction of a new church.

However, Kindiki felt that he was the senior most among Gitura and Wairia saying protocol demanded so.

Wairia, on the other hand, was overheard saying the leaders were in his county and as the county chief he was obliged to welcome the Ruto to address the congregation.

The standoff was a culmination of open rivalry between Wairia and Gitura.

Both of them were claiming credit for having convinced the Deputy President to grace the event.

At the end, it was decided that Kindiki welcomes Ruto.

Several leaders from Murang’a who had boycotted a previous function attended by Ruto showed up yesterday.

MPs Jamleck Kamau (Kigumo), Alice Wahome (Kandara),Tirus Ngahu (Kangema) and Clement Wambugu boycotted a thanksgiving ceremony for Murang’a women’s representative Sabina Chege where Ruto was the chief guest a few weeks ago.

In the last few months, there has been a lot of rivalry between the Murang’a elected leaders and this has led to some of them refusing to share the same platform.
