DEVOTION:Have You Missed Something?

I recently went back to the Book of Nehemiah to read it over again for my devotions, which is the second time in a year. Even though there are many other books in the Bible I haven’t read this year, I felt there was something I missed in this book. It is amazing how many things I have seen and learnt that I had never seen or learnt before.

By coincidence, the title of today’s devotion is,  “Have you missed something?” Read the following passage and you will see why I have picked this title.

On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God, because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. Nehemiah 3:1-2

Notice when scripture was read, it was found. What did they find? “That no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God”. Why did God give this command to the Israelites? Verse 2 gives the reasons for this.

Because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. Nehemiah 3:2

You might be asking at this point, what is the big deal about this prohibition. Verse 3 indicates that this command had been violated by the Israelites.

When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who were of foreign descent. Nehemiah 3:3

They that were not supposed to be part of the community had been allowed to mingle with the people of God. But as soon as they heard this command that they had missed, the children of Israel excluded them from their community. But we will see more tomorrow about the impact of breaking this command.

It was by the reading of God’s word that the children of Israel found out that they had violated a command from God. You never know how much you have missed in scripture because of failure to read the word of God.

APPLICATION:

1.    Is it possible that you have violated some commands of God because you have not been reading scripture? What could it be? It is not only a violation of God’s command that you might have missed, you might have missed out on God’s blessing for your life. Here is what Christ says about Scripture.

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. Revelation 1:3

2.    You cannot know what you are missing or have missed until you read God’s word. Begin today reading God’s word.

3.    But if you have been reading God’s word on a regular basis, then you are probably doing the right things. But you might want to read it over and over while asking God to reveal to you anything that you might have missed.

4.    Here is a prayer I love praying every time before I begin reading God’s word.

Open my eyes that I may see
wonderful things in your law. Psalm 119:18

The following question can only be answered

After you have read and heard
