Kenyans can afford referendum – Raila

CORD leader Raila Odinga has dismissed claims that a referendum is too costly and will have a negative impact on the economy. “A referendum is a constitutional provision that if Kenyans decide that they want, then the government must find funds to ensure it is held,” said Raila.

The former PM said those claiming that a referendum will overburden taxpayers are afraid of the poll. Raila was speaking during the burial of his former aide Eliud Owalo’s sister Emma Owalo in Rarieda constituency on Saturday.

His brother Oburu Odinga supported his sentiments saying there is no way people can argue about referendum costs that have not been established. Oburu said it is only through the referendum that Kenyans will achieve democracy and the government must be ready to meet the cost of the poll.

He at the same time challenged the government to join them in the push for the referendum. Siaya governor Cornel Rasanga and veteran Homa Bay politician Elisha Akech also attended the funeral.
