Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has said there was need to explore other alternatives to address problems facing the country rather than pushing for a national referendum.
A referendum, he said, should be the last option after exhausting other avenues provided for by the Constitution.
Speaking at Kairi ACK Church in Mathioya, Murang’a County, Dr Kidero said the Constitution provides both for a referendum and amendments if there was a constitutional issue to be addressed.
He urged people to first exhaust the other options rather than rushing for popular opinion through the referendum.
“The constitution is very clear of the existing alternatives to solve constitutional disputes with a referendum being the last option,” said Kidero.
He spoke as governors from Mt Kenya region led by Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a), William Kabogo (Kiambu) and Nderitu Gachagua (Nyeri) disowned calls for a referendum by their counterparts led by Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto.
Dr Kidero’s comments come a day after the Opposition Cord started a campaign to collect a million signatures from voters to endorse their push for a national referendum.
He said issues facing Kenya should be approached in a sober manner while taking into consideration the future interests of the country.
“The small problems facing the country can be sorted out if we come together for a purpose,” said the Nairobi governor.
He said he had a sound working relationship with members of the Nairobi County Assembly.
“When there are problems we sit down as the county leaders and look for the best solutions,” said Kidero.
