Over 30 million Kenyans use mobile phones, Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) revealed on Wednesday.

The figure represents 79 per cent of the country’s total population.

“As of March this year, there were 32 million mobile subscribers while internet users were 21.6 million representing 53 per cent of the total population, ” CAK director general Francis Wangusi said.

He added that there are currently 26.2 million mobile money transfer subscribers indicating how extensively ICT has permeated the society.

He was speaking at the Machakos People’s Park while launching the county’s ICT consumer forum also attended by governor Alfred Mutua.

He added that the forum will seek to create a medium for dialogue allowing interaction with the authority and ICT service providers.

Wangusi said the forum will also provide mechanisms for direct feedback from consumers- the best way to address key concerns affecting them.

Governor Mutua said Machakos had embraced ICT and that the county had already installed over 500 CCTV cameras which were fully functional in real time.

He added that major venues like Kenyatta stadium and the people’s park have Wi-Fi internet connections which have proved to be very popular with users the world over.
