Truck-nakuru keterA mobile borehole-drilling truck at the centre of an ugly spat between two lawmakers and Gilgil weighbridge officers has finally been released.

The truck was allowed to continue on its journey after its owners produced documents showing that a fee charged on lorries with loads exceeding the allowed weight limit had been waived.

It was headed to Kapedo in Baringo County.

On Sunday evening, Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter, accompanied by his URP colleague Sunjeev ‘Sonia’ Kaur Birdi, engaged weighbridge officials in a heated argument after the truck was detained because its weight exceeded the allowed limit.

Only lorries carrying loads weighing 47 tonnes and below are allowed on Kenyan roads.

Weighbridge official Shadrack Kimanzi confirmed the release of the truck and warned that no overweight trucks would be allowed to pass through the weighbridge.

Mr Keter was filmed threatening and insulting police officers and workers at the Gilgil weighbridge on the Nairobi-Nakuru road.

The expletive-laden rant was recorded by one of the officers using a cell phone.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, State House, the Transport and Infrastructure ministry and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission also weighed in, all condemning the incident.
