Photos:AP handcuffs man, goes drinking
Residents of Gituamba village in Lari constituency on Sunday unchained a man who had been left by AP officers to burn in the sun all day long.
Mathore Karuku had been handcuffed and chained at a pole in the AP camp.
Locals said the officer who arrested him went to the nearby shopping centre to get drunk and forgot about him.
A resident, Charles Kibue said: “He called us ugly names when we called him to take Karuku inside the police station instead of letting him burn in the sun.”
Locals said Karuku remained chained from 9am to 3pm.
Residents took the keys from the officer who staggered into the AP camp and freed Karuku.
Mathore said he was arrested after a trader accused him of foul play in a timber deal.
He said he sold the timber to the highest bidder, but one trader called the police and had him arrested.
“I transact my business with the highest bidder to make more profit,” he said.
The officer who arrested him accused Mathore of collecting money from all the traders.
When he was freed, he reported the incident at Lari police station.
Residents appealed to county commissioner Esther Maina and Lari deputy county commissioner Bernard Kinyua to take a legal action against the officer.
