Government will pay Mzee Ojwang’s medical bill,Ruto says


The government will pay legendary actor Mzee Ojwang’s hospital bill, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

The actor, whose real name is Benson Wanjau, has been battling failing eyesight due to the effects of diabetes and was on Wednesday taken to Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital in Loresho. He is set to undergo an operation today (Friday).

“The Government will pay the medical bill for Mzee Ojwang’. We wish him a quick recovery,” the Deputy President posted on his Twitter account Friday.

News of the condition of the actor trended on Twitter on Friday. Kenyans on social media started a campaign to help clear his hospital bill under the hashtag #OkoaMzeeOjwang .

Mike Sonko is among the prominent Kenyans who came to the aid of Mzee Ojwang’ after the actor’s co-stars in the popular TV show “Vitimbi”, led by Mama Kayayi, approached him for help.

Mzee Ojwang has inspired many comedians and actors, including top comedian Daniel “Churchill” Ndambuki, aka Mwalimu King’ang’i, who today took to his Facebook page to remember Mzee Ojwang’. The post reads, in part:

“..and so one day we did a photo-shoot…With borrowed suits..Rua complained about it being oversize.., mzee looked great in His suit…mine was way bigger..I had to lift my leg..isianguke! The journey continues…‪#‎GetWellSoon ‪#‎MzeeOjwang It shall be well.”

“Vitimbi” aired on the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation for decades until early this year when it moved to DStv’s Maisha Magic Channel.
