Her students who attended the ceremony held a banner reading “To the world, you maybe a teacher but in our eyes you are a superhero”

Ms. Mucheru-Garza, 32, is a sister to Liza Mucheru-Wisner, a Corpus Christi, Texas resident and the founder of City of Corpus Christi Learning Institute. Liza also participated in the 2010 season of Donald Trump’s The Apprentice where she finished in third place.

She is also a sister to Njeri Mucheru, a lawyer in Nairobi.

Ms Mucheru-Garza studied attended Brookhouse School in Nairobi where after high school, she left for the US.

She enrolled at Del Mar College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2011.

She is a fourth-grade teacher where she integrates technology into her lessons as a way to keep her students engaged; in one lesson about communication, her class shared a Skype conversation with Ms. Mucheru-Garza’s sister in Kenya.

The Kenyan native was honored for exemplifying the passion, determination, and innovative spirit that are the hallmarks of Corpus Christi’s best teachers and for inspiring in her students a love of learning that will serve them well throughout their lives.

The House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature also congratulated Ms Mucheru-Garza on her feat through the Texas House Resolution (TX HR1776). The Resolution was sponsored by Texas Representative Abel Herrero a Democrat.

The legislature passed that an official copy of the resolution be prepared for Ms. Mucheru-Garza as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.

On April 16, she will be feted at a Teacher of the Year banquet.

Ms Mucheru-Garza may be well on her way to winning National Teacher of the Year honors where winners are feted by US President Barack Obama at the White House in Washington DC.
