Uhuru witness signing of Kenya, Italy legal assistance agreements

Uhuru in ItalyMILAN, Italy, Sep 9 – Kenya and Italy have signed two agreements that will help in combating unconventional international crimes including terrorism, cybercrimes and wildlife trafficking.

The Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance agreements were signed by Attorney General Githu Muigai and Italy’s Minister for Justice Andrea Orlando at a brief ceremony witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Milan on the sidelines of the Milan Expo 2015.

Under the agreements, Kenya and Italy will support each other in domestic investigation and judicial proceedings.

“Through this framework, the two States can cooperate in the provision of support to and from each country’s jurisdiction in domestic investigative and judicial proceedings,” the agreements said in part.

The agreements enable the Office of Attorney General and Department of Justice of Kenya, and the Ministry of Justice of Italy to work closely in legal matters.

The two agreements also will incorporate measures to regulate and tighten controls that will enhance the scope and definitions of criminal acts and accompanying penalties.

Through the Extradition and Mutual Legal Assistance agreements, Kenya and Italy will benefit from an understanding of the relevant laws and procedures relating to the provision of inter-State legal assistance in criminal matters.
