KERICHO: Legislators from South Rift have scoffed at plan by CORD leaders led by former Prime Minister (PM) Raila Odinga to hold prayer rallies for the Deputy President William Ruto over the International Criminal Court (ICC) charges.
The MPs led by Ainamoi legislator Benjamin Langat, Joseph Limo (Kipkelion East) Jackson Rop (Kipkelion West) Justice Kemei (Sion/Sigowet) and Senator Charles Keter blamed Raila for the DP’s woes saying they would not allow the members of the opposition to hold “mockery prayers” in the area.
“The facts is that members of the opposition are praying every day that Jubilee government would collapse and United Republican Party and The National Alliance party union would disintegrate” Langat said
“The former Prime Minister recently announced that CORD would begin holding prayer rallies in South Rift to pray for the deputy president and confess the truth over the Kenyan International Criminal Cases. We already know the truth and we don’t welcome the opposition to politic in the region. If CORD’s co-principals are serious, they should begin with their strongholds such as Bondo,” he added.
Limo argued that if Raila and his CORD co-principals were sincere with their initiative, they would have begun holding the prayers in Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) strongholds before venturing out to other areas.
“The former Prime Minister suffers from amnesia since he had forgotten that he led the lobbying for the Kenyan cases to be tried at The Hague-based court but he now want to make a hasty retreat and want to begin hold prayer rallies for the Deputy President begin with South Rift region”
“We would not allow him to come here because we know he is insincere and wants to simply attempt to misled members of the Kalenjin community once again like he did in the 2007 general election,” said Limo.
Rop argued that if Raila Odinga had been sincere with this motive. He would have travel to The Hague to testify before beginning the prayer rallies.
Keter asked Kenyans to pray for the former PM so that he can immediately take a flight to The Hague based court to testify and absolve Ruto from the claims levelled against him.
His Meru counterpart Kiraitu Mirungu argued that his opinion as a legal advocate was that the case lacked merit and would collapse like a house of cards.
“Four other Kenyans led by President Uhuru Kenyatta faced the same charges at the International Criminal Court and the cases were terminated because they lacked merit. It’s only a matter of time before the Deputy President is also vindicated of his charges,” he said.
