NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 7 – Provisional results in Kericho have put Aaron Cheruiyot of the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP) in the lead with 76,987 votes and his closest rival Kipkorir Sang of KANU second with 41,208 votes in 463 centres out of 623.
Daniel Kipkorir of the National Vision Party is third with 620 votes while Wycliffe Kepkemoi (NVP) has 364 votes. David Kipkoech (ND) had 326 while Paul Kipyegon of UDM has 324.
In Malindi, ODM’s William Mtengo is leading in the poll with 3,497 votes against 1,569 garnered by Philip Charo of JAP in 24 out of 100 centres.
The other contenders in the race include Attas Sharif Ali of (LPK) who has 127 votes and Reuben Katana of KADU Asili who has got 107 votes.
Counting of ballots got underway promptly after polls closed at 5pm in a day that was marked by counter-claims of voter bribery.
Capital FM News reporters and correspondents covering the by -elections in the two areas indicated that voting closed as scheduled.
But despite the accusations traded by politicians, voters interviewed expressed confidence that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) would ensure fairness in the final outcome.
Jubilee Alliance Party’s Cheruiyot and KANU’s Sang are front runners in the Kericho Senate contest that was billed as a supremacy battle between Deputy President William Ruto, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi of KANU and Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto.
